Farmers Protests Block Five Major Highways in France

(MENAFN) Farmers orchestrated widespread disruptions across southwestern France on Tuesday, seizing control of at least five major highways in escalating demonstrations against mandatory livestock culling protocols and the controversial EU-Mercosur commercial pact.

The highway blockades spanning multiple regions represented a continuation of mounting rural unrest, media reported. Transportation infrastructure faced severe disruption as agricultural workers expanded their tactics beyond roadways.

Officials anticipate additional protest activity will materialize in upcoming hours, sources indicated.

Demonstrators extended their blockade strategy to rail infrastructure, obstructing train operations in the Haute-Garonne department alongside their highway actions.

The agricultural community has sustained multi-day demonstrations opposing government-mandated wholesale cattle herd elimination policies triggered when nodular dermatitis—commonly called lumpy skin disease—is detected in livestock populations.

Rural producers are simultaneously voicing strong opposition to the commercial framework linking the European Union with the South American trading coalition comprising Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, known as Mercosur.
